Pa’lante Desert Pack with Joey straps

Pa’lante Desert Pack with Joey Straps combines the proven long-distance carrying capability of the Desert Pack with the comfortable vest-style shoulder straps from the Pa’lante Joey. Designed for thru-hiking, backpacking, extended food and water carries, and demanding backcountry adventures, this version provides a close, comfortable fit while retaining the practical trail-focused features and increased capacity of the Desert Pack.

The pack is constructed from durable 210D UHMWPE Gridstop, combined with tough 70D 3x3 UHMWPE Grid Mesh for the external pockets. This combination offers an excellent balance of low weight, durability and abrasion resistance for long-distance hiking and demanding terrain.

The defining feature of this version is its Joey-style vest shoulder strap system. Instead of conventional backpack shoulder straps, it uses wide, body-hugging straps constructed from two layers of soft, spongy 3D mesh. The material molds comfortably around the shoulders and helps disperse the pack load across a larger area. Combined with the Desert Pack's thru-hiking design, this creates a particularly comfortable and stable carrying system for long days on trail.

The vest-style straps incorporate large UHMWPE grid mesh chest pockets, keeping frequently used essentials directly at hand. They can accommodate items such as soft flasks, a phone, compact camera, snacks and other small trail essentials without requiring you to remove the backpack. The harness is stabilized by two sternum straps – the upper sternum strap can be adjusted vertically via a daisy chain, while the lower sternum strap is fixed in position.

The Desert Pack with Joey Straps is available in 17", 19" and 19" with long straps. The 17" version provides 37 L of internal capacity, while the 19" versions provide 43 L. The long-strap version adds approximately 2" of additional shoulder strap length above the strap pockets, providing a more comfortable fit for taller or larger hikers.

The versatile snap button, buckle, roll-top and G-hook closure allows the pack volume to adapt as food and supplies are consumed throughout a trip. The G-hook closure incorporates a haul loop and can also be used to secure additional equipment or a bear canister on top of the pack when it is not completely filled.

Large, easily accessible side pockets provide approximately 2.5 L of water capacity on each side and are designed so bottles and other essentials can be reached while hiking. Tension-lock shock cords can secure taller items in the pockets, provide additional pack compression or be used to hang wet gear to dry. The stashable webbing hip belt has its own dedicated garage inside the side pocket, keeping it out of the way without interfering with bottles or other stored gear. Aluminum suspension rings are used on the side adjustment straps.

The large front UHMWPE grid mesh pocket includes a dedicated stake pocket, while the bottom UHMWPE grid mesh pocket keeps snacks and other frequently used items accessible without removing the pack. A smaller opening on the opposite side serves as a convenient trash portal.

A folded sleeping pad or sit pad can be placed against the back panel to provide additional structure and cushioning. Other trail-focused details include an ice axe loop and a hydration bladder hose port, particularly useful during very long water carries.

For trips requiring bear-resistant food storage, the Desert Pack can accommodate a BV500 or smaller bear canister vertically inside the pack. A bear canister can also be carried externally on top under the G-hook when the pack is not completely filled. Pa’lante recommends carrying it empty or with trash when positioned on top for a more balanced carry.
