DESCRIPTION
Tarptent ProTrek
The ProTrek is Tarptent's freshest take on the trekking-pole shelter — and one of the most talked-about ultralight tents of 2026. Launched in January as the successor to the much-loved ProTrail, it swaps the old straight A-frame for a clever asymmetric geometry that opens up far more ways to pitch, enter, and ventilate, all while keeping the total weight under 700g. Light enough to protect your base-weight goals, tough enough to shrug off real trail abuse.
At the heart of it is a genuinely small footprint that tucks into campsites where bigger shelters simply won't fit — tight forest floors, rocky ledges, narrow pitches — yet the interior still stretches to comfortably host hikers up to 1.98 m / 6'6" and wide pads up to 71 cm / 28" each. Early reviewers have singled out exactly this: an airy, versatile shelter that feels roomier than its compact size suggests.
One of the ProTrek's most distinctive features is its innovative rear ventilation system. The rear corners can be rolled up to dramatically improve airflow and create panoramic views, all while maintaining full bug protection and shielding the interior from overhead rain. Combined with the ability to fully roll back the vestibule doors, the shelter offers excellent condensation management in a wide range of conditions.
The compact footprint makes the ProTrek especially easy to pitch on small or uneven campsites where larger shelters simply won't fit. Its aerodynamic profile, reinforced tie-out points, and adjustable pitch height provide excellent stability in strong winds while allowing users to lower the shelter for maximum weather protection or raise it for increased ventilation.
Built with premium materials throughout: including YKK zippers, DAC stakes, UltraPE guylines, and magnetic door toggles — the ProTrek reflects Tarptent's reputation for designing shelters that perform reliably in real backcountry conditions.
Who it's for
The ProTrek is ideal for the solo three-season backpacker who wants a light, fast-pitching, made-in-USA shelter without paying Dyneema prices. It's especially at home in forested and mixed terrain where its compact footprint and rich ventilation options really shine — think long-distance trails, summer alpine trips, and anywhere you value being able to open the shelter up to a view. Tall hikers who normally feel cramped in one-person tents get room to spare, and anyone who dislikes wrestling with struts will appreciate the clean, simple setup.
Why choose the ProTrek
You get Tarptent's hand-built quality and thoughtful engineering in a shelter that's light, durable, and endlessly configurable — front entry, side entry, rolled-back vestibules, adjustable height — so a single tent adapts from a calm summer night to a blustery ridge. Add a small packed size, a proper 6'6" fit, and premium hardware, and the ProTrek makes a strong case as the do-everything ultralight home for your next season on trail.
