DESCRIPTION

Pitch it anywhere. The Gossamer Gear The Free is the brand's first fully freestanding, double-wall ultralight tent – it stands on its own the second the poles click into place, with no stakes and no guesswork. Wooden platform, bare granite, packed desert sand or a crowded shelter site: it goes up fast and holds its shape.

Built on nearly 30 years of Gossamer Gear's ultralight expertise, The Free pairs a genuinely freestanding pole architecture with Gossamer Gear's own ClearSkies™ fabric, so you get the convenience of a stand-anywhere tent without the weight penalty that usually comes with it – just 845 g / 29.8 oz trail weight.

Truly freestanding
No stakes needed to raise it. Set up on any surface, then peg out the fly vestibule (and add stakes in wind for extra stability).
Foolproof, colour-coded setup
A DAC NFL 8.7 mm aluminium pole set with a central swivel connector and snap attachments. Matching colours on the poles and hardware webbing show exactly what clips where – pitch it right the first time, every time.
ClearSkies™ storm protection
Custom 15D recycled Robic canopy backed by a 20D dope-dyed ripstop grid and a silicone/PU coating (1200 mm), rated to a 4,923 mm hydrostatic head – well above the typical three-season tent and close to heavy-duty mountaineering shelters. That's 2.35× the water resistance of earlier Gossamer Gear fabrics at the same weight.
PFAS-free, built to last
No forever chemicals in the coating. Factory-taped seams, double fly tie-backs and an eco green anodised pole treatment that cuts toxins, uses less water in production and adds durability.

Made for bad weather. Taped seams, 4,000 mm+ water resistance, twin tie-back points on the fly and six aluminium stakes give you a dependable pitch when the sky turns serious.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need stakes to stand The Free up?
No. It's a true freestanding tent and pitches on any surface without stakes. You'll use the included stakes to open out the fly vestibule and to add stability in wind, but they aren't needed to raise the shelter itself.

Will a 25" wide sleeping pad fit?
Technically the floor isn't cut for a full 25" pad, but one will still slot in – it just presses the side walls outward a little. For the cleanest fit, choose a wide tapered pad.

How tall can I be and still be comfortable?
It comes down to your seated height. With a 39" peak, anyone whose seated height stays under that will have room. We'd put the practical ceiling around 6'2"; campers 6'4" and over – especially on an inflated pad – will likely brush the roof.

What is ClearSkies™ fabric?
Gossamer Gear's in-house shelter fabric: PFAS-free 15D recycled Robic nylon woven with a 20D dope-dyed ripstop grid for durability, UV stability and tear resistance at very low weight. A silicone/PU coating (1200 mm) seals it completely and makes it highly hydrophobic, so morning dew shakes straight off. The result is a 4,923 mm hydrostatic head – above the average three-season tent and nearly at the 5,000 mm mountaineering benchmark.

What's the difference between trail weight and packed weight?
Trail weight (29.8 oz / 845 g) covers the fly, tent body and poles. Packed weight (32.6 oz / 924 g) adds the stakes, stuff sack and pole bag. Both are listed so you can plan your load accurately.

How does it handle storms?
Factory-taped seams, ClearSkies™ fabric rated above 4,000 mm, double tie-back points on the fly and six aluminium stakes make for a reliable pitch in serious weather.
