DESCRIPTION
The Enlightened Equipment Rain Wrap is an ultralight rain skirt for backpacking, hiking and thru-hiking. At just 51 g (Regular), it keeps your hips and thighs protected from the rain without the sweat, weight and bulk of traditional rain pants – and you can put it on without taking off your backpack or shoes.
Made from waterproof 7D Sil/PU nylon, the Rain Wrap simply wraps around your waist, tightens with an elastic shock cord and closes with snaps. Rotate the snaps to the side or to the back for a full range of movement, or open them to vent when the climb gets steep. When the rain stops, it stuffs into its own sewn-in pouch and disappears into your hip belt pocket or the side of your pack.
Thanks to tie-out loops, the Rain Wrap also works as a small tarp or ground cloth – one more piece of gear that earns its place in an ultralight kit.
Why Hike in a Rain Skirt Instead of Rain Pants?
Rain skirts and rain wraps have become a favourite of long-distance hikers for a simple reason: in many rainy conditions, they can keep you more comfortable than traditional rain pants. Here is why.
You stay dry from the inside, too
Rain pants block the rain, but on a climb with a loaded pack they also trap the heat and sweat your legs produce. Many hikers end up just as wet inside their rain pants as they would be without them. The Rain Wrap is open at the bottom, so warm, humid air escapes and fresh air flows in with every step.
On in seconds – pack and shoes stay on
No hopping on one leg in the mud, no pulling trousers over dirty trail runners, no taking off your pack. Wrap it around your waist, close the snaps and keep walking. That is exactly why you will actually put it on when the first drops fall – and take it off again when the sun comes out.
Free stride on every step
There is nothing pulling at your knees on big step-ups, nothing rubbing between your legs and no constant rustling. You hike in your normal shorts or trousers with full freedom of movement.
A fraction of the weight and pack volume
At just 51 g for the Regular size, the Rain Wrap weighs less than most phones and packs smaller than a fist. Keep it in your hip belt pocket and it is always within reach – no need to dig through your pack in a downpour.
The perfect partner for your rain jacket
Your jacket protects your upper body, the Rain Wrap covers your hips and thighs – the area where your jacket ends and where shorts or trousers get soaked first. Lower legs dry quickly on their own, and in sustained rain your shoes get wet anyway, so full-length rain pants often add weight without adding real comfort.
More than rain protection
Use it as a small ground cloth for a dry lunch break on wet ground, or pitch it with the tie-out loops as a small tarp. Multi-use gear is the heart of ultralight backpacking.
