DESCRIPTION

Durston Iceline RS Trekking Poles (Rock & Snow) are a more rugged, all-season version of the innovative Iceline trekking poles, specifically engineered for off-trail adventures, rocky terrain, winter hiking and demanding mountain conditions. By combining a premium carbon fiber upper section with thick-walled aluminum middle and lower sections, the RS version delivers exceptional strength, stiffness and resistance to accidental impacts while remaining remarkably lightweight at just 185 g (6.5 oz) per pole.

What Makes the Iceline RS Different?

The Iceline RS (Rock & Snow) takes the proven Iceline design to a new level of durability. While the regular Iceline Gen 2 weighs just 133 g (4.7 oz) and is optimized for ultralight three-season hiking primarily on established trails, the RS version prioritizes greater strength, impact resistance and year-round reliability. Its two lower carbon sections are replaced with thicker-walled aluminum tubing, making the poles substantially more resistant to accidental impacts, concentrated loads and the stresses encountered when hiking off-trail, crossing talus fields or travelling in winter conditions.

Despite the more robust construction, the Iceline RS weighs only 185 g per pole, offering strength comparable to many conventional trekking poles weighing approximately 230–270 g. This makes the RS an excellent choice for hikers who want the confidence of a more durable trekking pole without carrying unnecessary weight.

The RS version retains the innovative three-piece construction with a single external adjustment mechanism that makes the Iceline design so efficient. Unlike conventional three-piece trekking poles that typically require two adjustment systems, the Iceline RS combines a reliable upper external aluminum lever lock with a lightweight lower Quick Connect mechanism. This reduces complexity, eliminates the possibility of slippage at the lower connection and makes length adjustment faster and more convenient.

During normal hiking, the poles operate like conventional two-section trekking poles. When it's time to pack them away, the lower section can be disconnected using the Quick Connect mechanism, allowing the poles to collapse to just 49 cm (19.5"). The adjustable length range of 95–127 cm (37–50") provides excellent versatility for different users, terrain and trekking conditions.

Strength and stiffness are at the heart of the Iceline RS design. The upper section is made from premium high-modulus carbon fiber, while the middle and lower sections use thick-walled aluminum tubing. With large section diameters of 18 mm at the top and 16 mm for both lower sections, the poles maintain exceptional stiffness and durability, particularly near the tip where trekking poles are most vulnerable to breakage.

The reinforced construction provides outstanding resistance to bending and accidental impacts. In Durston's demanding horizontal span testing, the Iceline RS poles can support over 75 lb (approximately 34 kg) per pole, demonstrating impressive strength for their low weight. The aluminum lower sections are particularly well suited to rocky off-trail terrain, where accidental contact with rocks and concentrated impacts can damage lighter carbon poles.

The Quick Connect lower mechanism incorporates an O-ring that minimizes rattling and ensures quiet operation while hiking. The premium external lever lock uses durable aluminum components and offers easier adjustment, maintenance and servicing compared to conventional internal twist-lock systems.

Every detail is optimized for durability and weight efficiency, including the custom-shaped ergonomic EVA foam grip, a lightweight polymer tip housing with a durable carbide tip, and a minimalist matte finish that eliminates unnecessary weight.

Custom manufactured in Austria by Komperdell, one of the world's leading manufacturers of premium trekking poles, the Iceline RS combines high-quality materials, precision engineering and a thoughtfully refined design. The poles include wrist straps and a lightweight 5 g Dyneema stuff sack made from repurposed fabric offcuts from Durston's premium X-Mid Pro tents. A pair of larger baskets is also included for softer surfaces such as sand and snow.

The Iceline RS poles are also fully compatible with Durston X-Mid trekking pole tents and can be used as optional supports for X-Dome tents, making them a versatile addition to an ultralight backpacking setup.

Which Iceline Trekking Poles Are Right for You – Regular or RS?

Choose the regular Iceline Gen 2 if your priority is the lowest possible weight for primarily on-trail, three-season hiking. Choose the Iceline RS if you regularly venture into rugged terrain, hike off-trail, travel in shoulder-season or winter conditions, or simply prefer additional strength and durability for demanding adventures.
